Adventure Play in the Bay

Adventure Play in the Bay aims to enable children living within some of the highest deprived wards in Torbay to access adventurous activities that they would normally not be able to take part in (due to lack of transport, insufficient funds, lack of inclusive play environment, individual and/or additional needs).

"As soon as we came back to school after half term M came to find me to tell me what a great time he had over the holiday. He couldn't decide which activity he had enjoyed the best as they were all so good! His class teacher and the staff who work closely with him to support his social/emotional needs agreed that It was like having the old M back who we haven't seen In a long while!" Debbie Torpey  - Hayes School (March 2010)

Our aims:

~Ensure that children & young people participating would be welcome to voice their needs, be valued when offering feedback and ideas and would help shape the project in the future.
~Provide a positive adventure play experience for all involved (children, young people, volunteers, adults, instructors and staff).

Canoe Adventure Tuckenhay
           Easter 2010

In 2007-2008 Adventure Play in the Bay was funded by BBC Children in Need, during that time the project facilitated 2335 activities for children and young people 4-17.

2008-2009 saw people come together to support the project in all sorts of different ways. We had people bag pack, the Junior Street Wardens and FUNK did a sponsored Tree Top Adventures, Community Partnerships from all over the bay dug deep,  the Youth Service and Early Years Play and Childcare helped with free activities and by staffing the events. Other sponsors included; Targeted Youth Support, Brixham Parish Council, Short Breaks Participate Funding, Recycle Torbay, the Soroptermists, Crime Beat, West Country Housing and even a group of councillors who personally contributed toward the Victorian Beach Adventure at Goodrington.

We also received a lot of support in kind - with people going the extra mile to improve the outcomes on activities run by Adventure Play in the Bay - a BIG  thankyou must go to Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, The IBEX Canoe Club, Grenville House, Torre Abbey, The Brixham Bezerkers, Torquay Museum, Hi Flyer, Torbays Residents and Visitors Services, Torbays Safer Communities - the list goes on...

Because of the amazing communal support not only has the project kept its head above water in 'credit crunch' conditions it has facilitated a massive 1,700 Adventures free of charge to children and young people from across Torbay.

Things are looking a little brighter for the future; because of an amazing rally by the teams entering last years Great Recycled Raft Race and raising over £1000 in sponsorship (that's three times as much as 2008) the Torbay Play Forum  have opened a new bank account especially for the event  - and the Great Recycled Raft Race 3 is set to run during the summer holidays 2010
January 2010: The Torbay Play Forum have submitted a three year bid to BBC Children in Need to consolidate, extend and sustain the range of adventures open to children in need in Torbay with Doorstep Adventures and the Young Leaders programme.   Aiming Higher funding for Adventure Play in the Bay:
The Torbay Play Forum are very pleased to announce that we have secured funding to support disabled young people access the adventures THEY CHOOSE.
Working in partnership with Torbays Specialist Services who will provide experienced 1:1 workers, we aim to facilitate successful inclusion on all of the wide range of activities Adventure Play in the Bay has to offer.

        Doorstep Adventures

We have also been successful in a bid to Awards for All and the Coop to deliver DOORSTEP Adventures. With this project we bring the adventure of your choice right to your doorstep but that's just the beginning...

On a beautiful day in the Easter holidays the PHAB group, TADHD's, the YMCA and the Brixham Berzerkers all met at Torre Abbey Green and spent the whole day sharing games, having fun and they even got to have a picnic outside in the sun!

Do you want to have a Doorstep Picnic?

We are currently recruiting for our next Doorstep Adventures so hurry to get in touch! The Adventures will take place on your 'doorstep' sometime in June and the picnic is set to take place on Torre Abbey Green inside a fantastic huge yurt on 28 July 2010.

If you would like a Doorstep Adventure in your community setting contact Jemma or
download a Doorstep Adventure leaflet and start planning!

FUNK ADVENTURES: FUNK (The Film Us Now Krew), a group of young people age 8-18 who support the Torbay Play Forum in the evaluation of Adventure Play in the Bay and Creative Play Journeys, last year requested the opportunity to develop their own adventure - this year they're doing just that - During the summer FUNK hope to deliver their own camping adventure for children and young people from Torbay . The Torbay Play Forum has built FUNK Adventures into their PAYP programme and thier Children In Need bid and are committed to supporting the development and  delivery of their first adventure during 2010 - The Easter holidays saw FUNK and the Canterer mentors join for a huge team build - 2 nights camping at Sharpham with Torbays Outdoor Education team & a brilliant group of support workers - they journeyed on foot, in kayaks, canoes, the journeyed into caves, arched, built rafts and held 'dramatic'  meetings with potential activity providers round a camp fire - there they started plotting a story fo their camp adventure that they hope to deliver - so far it involves an indian quest to find the camp - half the group will orienteer on foot, half will orienteer by river, during their stay they will canoe to a near by island where their canoes will 'mysteriously dissappear'  and they will be stranded - clues will be offered for them to locate the materials needed to build a raft  - but how they do it will be their problem - meanwhile a beautiful tea of sausages, burgers and beans will be on the BBQ across the water - will they find a way home before tea time - watch this space?...

The Canterers:

During an evaluation session in the autumn of 2008 one young person said "I want to canter free in the fields." One of the biggest problems facing us is the lack of repeat funding available for individual young people  - taking a rider from beginner to Canterer is quite an investment - but thats just what we did, with the support of Targeted Youth Support, SRS Stables and White Horse Trekking Centre during 2009, 10 young people came together to learn how to ride and take care of horses -  between them they achieved a massive 30 accreditied outcomes during the process and they enjoyed themselves so much they put in a TOFFY bid to go on a Pony Trek camp to reach their final goal - they got their money and they did their camp - all 10 young people started their story as children in need - they ended 2009 as The Canterers

This Easter the Canterer Mentors come together to support a new cohort of riders, referred onto the project through Torbay Councils Youth Inclusion Programme and Children in Need services, as they undertook their first ride of 2010 at SRS Stables.  The Canterers have been successful in a bid to Sports Unlimited to fund the first three rides for the new cohort and Torbay Councils Early Years Pay  & Childcare are so keen to support the development of this young peoples initiative they are funding a Development worker to work with the Canterers Easter 2010 - October 2010 to help secure the funding to achieve their ultimate goal for 2010: 10 young people, helped by 10 young Canterer mentors, go from beginner to canterer -  watch this space...

Here is a short movie the Canterers made about thier story...
